Director’s statement

The idea of the film came to me after reading an article on Rue 89 reporting the existence of puberty tests.

Two young Congolese had been examined by a doctor upon the request of a police officer. Those tests were to determine the young girls’ age in order to evaluate their future on the French territory.

Therefore, if the doctor confirmed they had majority or more, they became deportable.

A copy of the medical report was joined with the article. We learned then that during this examination on potentially minor young girls, the doctor examined the bone structure, the dentition, as well as the sex and armpits’ hairiness. The violence of this image, the one of an unknown person examining young girls’ intimacy deeply shocked me.

This was the starting point of my work.

Q&A with the director

How long did it take to make your short? Was it dif- ficult to get financing?

I had the first idea of Aïssa reading an newspaper article in the end of 2007. I had some difficulties with the first production company I was in so I decided to wait to meet new producer. I met Takami Production in 2012. They found easily the money for the shooting. It was not an expensive movie and so not that hard to finance it. Two days of shooting, ten days of editing and post production. The movie was endend in October 2013 and first screened in Cannes 2014.

Which thoughts come to mind concerning a “Euro- pean cinema community”?

I’m not sure to fell an European cinema community. I think more about a Worldwide cinema community. My cinematographic culture has been made thanks to the awards winners of Cannes, Berlin and Venise film festival since I’m a kid. Even if this festivals are in Europe, their palmares are full of movies from all over the world and directors as Tran Anh Hung, Kitano, Zhang Yimou, Scorcese, Gray. I’ve benne traveling a lot with Aïssa in Europe and the influence of the others directors I met are more worldwide than European.

If you owned a theatre for one night, which films would you screen?

M by Fritz Lang, Code Unknown by Michael Haneke, Bringing out the dead by Martin Scorcese. And two shorts for the fun : The Chicken by Una Gunjak and Yes we Love by Hallvar Witzo.

What is your next project?

I’m writing two shorts and one feature. I don’t know yet wich one will be ready first.
